... as if my weekend wasn't sick enough.

I thought last weekend's score of $1050 couldn't be topped but amazingly I almost doubled that this weekend. I'm on a massive upswing right now. $2500 in two weeks, omy.

Saturday

• I won a Heads Up SNG for $20.
• Had $12 worth of bounties from various tournaments.
• Finished in 3rd place in the Bounty $4500 Guarantee for $472.50.
• Finished in 3rd place in the $2500 Guaranteed Rebuy for $366.03.
• Finished in 26th place in the $3000 Guaranteed Rebuy for $29.34.

Sunday

• Had $29 worth of bounties from various tournaments.
• Finished 4th place in the $1500 Guaranteed Rebuy for $215.47.
• Finished 45th place in the Bounty $3000 Guaranteed for $10.50.
• Finished 2nd place in the $6000 Guaranteed for $922.

Playing an average of a dozen tournaments/day, I finished ITM 25% of the time and FT'd 16.67% of the time. I made a total of $2047.84, but of course thats without taking out what I spent, which I'd estimate to be near $200 or so.

Double Final Tables

Someone was trying to tell me when I was losing money at NL50 for the past week. All the runbad and variance and swingy ups and downs and more downs and sicker downs were all a message from the poker gods: Stick to what you know. Play more MTTs.

I obeyed yesterday, playing in a dozen tournaments, 11 of which had guaranteed prize pools. I played everything that started after 6PM and cost less than $25: rebuys, freezeouts, bounties... absolutely everything.

At around 11PM or so it was becoming pretty evident that I was going to be having a monster night. I was running deep in two events, the 9PM $11 Bounty $4500 Guaranteed and the 9PM $3 Rebuy $2500 Guaranteed. It worked out great because the breaks matched up and the blinds were increasing at the same time. I have the oddest of bet sizes, so it helps to keep things similar.

The Bounty ran a little quicker since there were less chips on the table than the Rebuy. I was playing absolutely fantastic. I really wish I could remember some interesting hands fromt he FT, but I had a lot of other things going on as well. Too many tournaments.



In the Rebuy there was a player who was raising a ton of hands preflop, and it was evident that the table was letting him run him over. I knew what was going on and 3bet pushed the hell out of him. It was pretty sick to win 100k pots through doing this, but it worked. In the end, however, his aggressive persistence was just too much. I got too shortstacked and couldn't make a move.




I also cashed in a small rebuy for about $30.

No more cash games... for a long fucking time. I run absolutely terrible a them. Its unbelievable and I seriously just can't take it anymore. Also, back to only playing tournaments under $10. My roll is fine, but I was never truly comfortable playing the $25 MTTs anyways. I want to make this bankroll into something monstrous, but its going to be done one step at a time.

Runbad @ NL50; MTT focus.

Its been 2 or 3 days since my huge $1050 MTT score. I've been trying to play some NL50 since I felt like I was on a roll and my bankroll was large enough. Unfortunately, it hasn't been the smoothest ride. Its come down to a combination of running poorly and its ensuing tilt that has cost me probably $300+ in the last couple of days. $300 sounds like a lot, but thinking of it in terms of BBs, I've lost 6 buy-ins at NL50. From what I've heard about downswings, 6 buy-ins is a joke and nothing to be concerned about. I'll bounce back... but until then I'll be playing NL25 again, where the swings aren't so... swingly. I feel the need to rebuild my confidence as well.

I also should probably try getting more MTTs in, since I think I've been on a heater as of late (I FT'd two UB Guarantees last week). Being a student and having work kind of limits my playing schedule, but I think with the amount of time I have and where my bankroll is at, I'll be playing two events every evening: the 11:30PM $5 Rebuy $3k Guaranteed and the 12:00AM $25 Freezeout $6k Guaranteed. I'm confident my bankroll will be able to sustain these tournaments for awhile.

UB $10k Guaranteed

At the start of every month, poker players plop down in front of their computers and write down what they'd like to achieve in the upcoming month. Some examples are to play an x amount of hands, to practice good bankroll management, or to find and fix leaks in their game. Every month I try and do the same thing, although I'm not very skilled at it, especially as of late. This past post for February was weak as my only goal was to run my initial $50 bankroll up to $500. I'll justify that by saying that I'm just starting out and don't care how many hands I put in this month. Or that I couldn't give a flying shit about bankroll management because I barely have enough of a bankroll to manage anyways. Or just that I fucking run like god at poker and don't have any leaks to fix.

Not only do I write monthly Month in Review and Goal's posts, I also do yearly ones. I remember one of my biggest goals for 2008 was to have a four-figure score in an MTT. Well ladies and gentlemen, today was the day. I finished in 3rd place of the 1:30PM $10k Guaranteed and netted $1050 for the effort. I emailed UB Support for a copy of my hand history, and plan on writing a tournament report sometime this coming week. Look forward to that please.

My bankroll sits at $1415 and I've completely shattered my goal of $500 for the month of February. When I was making it, I told myself I should make it harder and aim for $1000. As Kanye West says, Reach for the stars so if you fail you'll fall on the clouds, or... something like that. I think.

Clearly I've graduated from NL10. My bankroll is too large for those swings to make a difference. The question now is whether to remain at NL25 or kick it up a notch to NL50. I have 28 buy-ins for NL50, which in my opinion is at least worth a shot. However, I would like to have at least 50 buy-ins before moving up to the next level, NL100.

So, this means that my next plateau is $5000.

As far as MTTs are concerned, I plan on playing every Guarantee under $22.

These are my updated goals for February.

PS, look forward to a strategy article about why you should widen your raising range from LP with limpers as well as how over-aggression from early position in the middle and late stages of an MTT will cost you in the long run.

Friday Night

Early in poker careers, players usually make the decision as to whether they are going to be primarily be either cash game players or MTT players. The games are two completely different monsters, each with their own intricacies, and I think many find it difficult to master both. I believe I'm fortunate in that I've had decent success at both, at least at the levels I've played at.

I mentioned in my February Goals post that I wanted to stick solely to MTTs, particularly the $4.30 Bounty $3k Gtd tournament at 8:30, as well as avoid cash games. I haven't done either of which, but things couldn't be going any better for me. There are a few reasons, and I'll talk strategy in a bit.

I've played roughly 3000 hands of NL10 and about 1000 hands of NL25 since Monday. I've had a few fun and brief sessions of NL50 as well. Overall, I believe I'm up $160 in cash games. I'm uncertain because yesterday I realized that that PokerTracker wasn't correctly keeping track of my profits. Assuming yesterday was the first time it messed up, I am up about $160 and feel that I'm playing pretty good.

As far as tournaments are concerned, I believe I'm up around $110 overall. My one big cash game a few nights ago in the $1 Rebuy $1k Gtd that I took 2nd place in for $181.81. I just realized that there is no way I've lost $70 in tournament buy-ins, so my math must be off somewhere, either in tournaments or cash. Apologies, and damn you PokerTracker.

I've never had a problem gaining chips in poker. I think that a lot of people find it pretty easy. Get a hand, bet it, win pot. The problem and difficult part of poker is when you find yourself on the defensive. Knowing whether to call a bet or a raise is challenging because you not only have to look at what you have, you have to consider what your opponent has. So, while its easy to gain chips, its difficult for many to keep them.

I have this problem still, but I used to have it much so much worse. I wouldn't know where my AK was after getting check-raised on a A67T board. Enter, the Baluga Theorem. Without going into too much detail, it essentially tells you that if you face heavy action (a raise or *gasp* check-raise) on the turn, you are usually beat. After all, put yourself in the shoes of the raiser: what would you raise with? Minimum two-pair. The Baluga Theorem has helped my cash game and tournament game immensely as I'm now holding on to my profits. I like playing small pot poker, meaning I make most of my money off of pre-flop raises and continuation bets. I usually take things down on the flop. Its on 4th and 5th street however where I start thinking about whether or not I'm behind. Before, I'd bet AK on an A-high board on the flop, turn, and river. Now, I'm probably just doing it on the flop and possibly turn/river, rarely both unless my hand improves.

The thing to remember is to keep the pots small with your weaker holdings (as common as one pair is, it is still second worst hand in poker) and bet when you have huge hands or even strong draws. Thinking about it, I think I play strong draws harder than I do one pair.

Another thing I've realized and tried to change about my game has to do with position. Everyone knows that position is everything and that you want to raise in late position. However, many find it challenging to call a raise from the blinds and play post-flop. You put yourself at a disadvantage from the start, why would you want that? Imagine the following scenario. You have KJdd in the SB and it folds aroud to a MP player, who makes it 3.5 times the big blind. It folds back to you and liking your hand you elect to see a flop, which comes down 8J5. Here, I usually lead out. I want to know where I stand in the hand and leading out does that. Does he fold, call, or reraise? Fold, he missed with AQ/AK or 99. Raise, he's sitting on a premium pocket pair. It gets tricky with a call, as it can be a stingy player who can't split with AK, or a premium pocket pair. If he has AK, he's drawing to 3 outs and thats fine. If you're beat, at least we found out cheaply. I check/call the turn (if he bets) and also check/call the river, unless he doesn't bet the turn, which would make me bet the river. I try to keep pots small when out of position, and I rarely play my big draws as aggressively. I'm a very passive player when OOP. You don't want to get too involved unless you have a good hand, at least two pair.

My next bit of strategy is in regards to big stacks. Big stacks are intimidating to some. However, I see them as an opportunity to win huge, whether it be in a cash game or tournament. With bigger stacks, you have better implied odds. This means when you hit your hand, you'll win big. Again, Google for more information. I often call raises from these big stack players with suited cards and small pocket pair, because if I win, I can take stack them or get doubled up. I always remember the Baluga Theorem however, and know when to fold. Really, I want to get my money in with at least two pair, but definitely rarely one pair. Using the Baluga Theorem, I can take a stab at making a lot at a big stack without giving up too much. Its okay to call a x3 raise preflop, and lead out for 4 big blinds, and get reraised. You lost 7. In the future however, you could stack your opponent and take in a massive 70 BB from him. For me, its worth it. Having the Baluga Theorem just makes it that much better. And, for clarification, I call big stacks when I have a big stack myself. I don't really want to get my money in as an underdog (since I'd be playing tricky suited and connected cards) against a biggie. I want us to both be at least 50BBs deep.

I'm at work now until about 12PM. I plan on playing a ton, we'll see how that goes though. Living at home sucks because I never can play without being distracted. I also feel bad staying in my room from 12PM until midnight because, well, that is pretty standard for me.

My First Cash

So yesterday was a really rough day. Had tremendously awful luck early. The only hand that comes to mind specifically is when I had pocket kinds. I raise preflop and get 1 caller. Flop comes 974. I raise 2/3 pot and he calls again. The turn is a J, where I raise big again and he calls. The river is a 9 and I stupidly push and he insta calls. Idiot shows K9. A delicious 2 outer that cost me 5 bucks. Yikes. But it was like that all day. Dropped me from $60 down to about $4o. So I started grinding all the way back, which culminated in my first cash in a MTT. I played brilliantly. Looking back on it, I can't recall any suckouts. I played patiently, trapped well, reraised stabbers, gained tremendous respect, the whole thing. It was great. The tournament was a $3 freezout and I took down 4th for $28.20. I was pumped! I can't really remember much else about it though. But back to the tables today, feeling good and playin hot.

Told y'all I'd be back

It hasn't even been two days since I've deposited and wow... I'm playing/running pretty damn good. It is so great to be playing again.


Me, BigPapi, BigSlick, and MJKinney have all been playing the 10:45PM $2 Bounty on UB for the past two nights. Its been a lot of fun because we all enter a chat room to keep in touch and we all have each others tables open. I'm cursed in that tournament however and am starting to hate it after just two attempts. Its too much fun to see who outlasts who though, so I'll keep it up. Plus, its such a small buyin, its almost like I gotta do it.

Cash games have been good to me. I play primarily NL10 6max and have done very well for myself thus far. I'm up a total of $75 from the ring tables and overall very pleased with my results. I feel like I'm playing straight up solid poker and its paying off.

I had a huge night tonight and took 2nd place in my still favorite UB Tournament, the 1:00AM $1r $1k Guaranteed, which netted me $181 bucks. I played pretty damn flawlessly and only recall one big suckout early on in the tourney.

Anyways, I'm entirely pleased with how things are going. Not even 48 hours into my $50 re-deposit into UB, my bankroll currently sits at...

Finally Bought In

So yesterday I got fed up with grinding away for a few bucks here and there and then seeing those hard earned dollars disappear after 2 or 3 bad beats. I finally bought into UB for $50, and I'm so excited. Now that I'm in, I feel like I can finally withstand a few beats here and there. Also, I can turn my attention to tourneys, which I'm real excited about. As for those, I'm going to avoid rebuys. While I've seen Saeid absolutely dominate them, I don't have any experience with them and I'd rather just avoid them altogether. Also, I've decided that until my roll gets healthier, I'm not going to play in any MTT's with a buy in greater than $3. This limits my MTT play even further, mostly down to the $2.20 bounties and the $1 Turbo at 6:15. While there aren't a tremendous amount of tourneys that fit the above criteria, I feel like it'll help limit my play to keep me playing smart and I can slowly chip up this way.

Initially, I figured I'd be hitting the sng's hard. However, I've found that I tend to get 2nds a lot, which means it's really difficult for me to have my cashes outweigh my busts. So sng's are out of the picture except for an occasional one here and there. Which leads me to where the bulk of my play will be: .05/.10 ring games. I've devised the system I'm going to be using, and it's pretty close to the opposite of Sae's. Mine is geared for the slow, steady, low risk method of building up my roll. I plan at only sitting at 6 person tables where there aren't any really big stacks and preferably not too many overaggressive players. This will help insure that I don't get pushed off any hands so I can slowly chip up. The main idea that I'll employ is a tier system I developed lying awake last night. For each table, I'll buy in with $5. From there, I'll work towards each $5 tier. If I achieve a new tier, I cash out if I fall back down to that level. For example, say I get up to $14, but then get cold or hit a bad hand and I fall back down to $10. That's when I cash and walk away. If I make it to $22, I leave if I fall back to $20. This will help me stay at hot tables and ride hot streaks while neutralizing cold streaks, bad luck, tilting away hands, and overaggressive play. It's gonna be slow, but I really think it'll work. I'm excited!

February 2008 Goals

I'm depositing $50 onto UB and possibly Full Tilt, although I'm still unsure about that. I have created a new account on Full Tilt, Birdz n Beez, so look out for me if I do decide to play cards there. I'm debating so much because of their tournament structure. I don't see many tournaments I'm interested in playing in. But, we'll see. I have a rakeback deal there though so it'd be in my best interest to take advantage of it.

My February goal is simple: build up my Ultimate Bankroll to $500. I plan on playing just one tournament per day, the $4.30 Bounty $3k Guaranteed that starts at 8:30 PM every night. First place always clears $700 and I'd be so happy to grab a piece of that. It was just only ~9 weeks ago where I was absolutely crushing MTTs, taking down two $22 $2k Guatanteed events nearly back-to-back, as well as final tabling in a handful of tournaments. I hope to make that happen again. I plan on exclusively using this $4.30 Bounty $3k Guaranteed MTT on UB to build my bankroll.

Freeroll

So, two days ago I busted in play chips on FTP. I had found that it was really hard for me to stay motivated. Maybe it was playing cash tables for a bit that did it, but grinding away at play chips lost all it's worth. With that, I decided to change up the philosophy a tad and go straight to the freerolls on UB. Luckily for me, that changed my luck almost instantly. They have a freeroll every hour that serves as a qualifier for a $1000 freeroll on Sunday. In addition to that, the top 20 out of the 30 who cash get actual cash too. A decent offer. Last night, one such freeroll started at 11:35. I, however, didn't make it to my seat until 12:30. With this, I had let my stack fall to 1100, but, at the same time, had let the field shrink from 4611 to around 1050. From there, I took over. I played beautifully, maxing out my sets and aces, stealing blinds during cold spells, making good lay downs, etc. I managed to stretch it all the way out, and grabbed a 4th place out of 4611. That was good for a shot at the $1000 freeroll on Sunday and $4 in the mean time. I'm pumped!! hahaha. So now it's back to the cash tables again. At last. Hopefully it'll last longer this time.

UB Points and Murphy1

So, earlier today, I had 6 bucks on UB but got terrible luck, bad play, and just more bad luck. So that's gone. Oh well. Now I'm trying to work my UB points up and go that route. Doing ok so far, but since I only started with 100 points, and the smallest sng is 100 points, there's not a lot of margin for error. But I'll post more about that as I go after it. Right now I have 200 total and I'm playing another sng. But anyways, many of you might be familiar with Murphy1 on UB. Sae pointed him out to me as a good player to watch, and up until now I've been impressed. Today I was watchin him play a rebuy where he was absolutely dominating. With 80ish left, he had 70k, with the average at about 16.5k and the blinds at 100/200. Absolutely destroying. And all of the sudden, he starts playin crazy aggressive. Pushing like crazy, and not gettin called for the most part, but showin bad hands. Sucked out a few times, but got caught showin ace rag several times. I understand that it's good to be aggressive with the big stack, but he would be pushing over the top of large raises with garbage quite often to say the least. It was unreal to watch him freefall and the get knocked out in 58th, 28 out of the money. Instantly he went to a $1/2 ring game where I didn't see what he bought in with, but he was at 43 when I saw him, so I'm assuming he tilted like crazy and dumped a bunch more. It was unreal to watch him just collapse, and it sure made me feel a lot better about losing my 6 bucks earlier. It was insane. Terrible play. I guess it happens to all of us.

I'm back (3/3 looool)

Did it again. Managed to finish ITM in the $5 MTT, good for just $7. First was $215. Why oh why can't I final table? I must not have been playing complete attention because all of a sudden I realized I was shortstack with T9000 and blinds at 600/1200. So I probably missed a ton of spots to steal, unfortunately. Ah well, we shall never know.

I'm starting to table talk a lot more, or at least yesterday I did. It really sped up the progress of the game and keeps it entertaining. Usually, I find watching the hands I'm not playing in highly boring and I'd rather open up Facebook or watch a movie or talk on AIM or something. Yesterday though, I saw most of the hands played at my tables, had fun chatting, and time flew by.

I just realized that UB added another pretty interesting tournament, a $3r $500 Gtd that starts at 9:00 AM. So, I decided to make a last of all the tournaments I would play if I had the money and time for them. One day, I hope I'll be able to. I'm really curious about what would happen if I just did nothing but play online poker for 6 months. I don't know if I'd get tired of it or get rich or go broke or what. I'm just... curious.

UB added a $5r $3k Gtd which just looks so yummy imo.

Obv I need like at least a $500 roll to play in it but knowing of its existence is exciting in itself.

I'm busto on UB and won't be back until paycheck day, which is in a week and a half.

Been playing play chip stuff cause I'm a gambler, ha. Feeling like I'll be playing really well when I get back. Thank you Baluga Theory. Will write an article about this in the future but it honestly might be the most important poker lesson I've ever learned. Google it.

Recovering

So last night was bad. Real bad. I was playing really well and had my overall stack up from 710k to 768k. Then I got dealt pocket kings and managed to play them slow enough but not just checking so that I got the only caller all in after the jack high flop. He showed KJo. Dominated. But of course, he hits his 2 outer on the river. Tilting a little bit. Then at another table, everyone leaves and it's just me and another guy heads up. So I play it accordingly, and start playin more aggressive. He, naturally, doesn't like that, and gets over aggressive when I have 5s. I put him all in, and he insta-calls with A8o. He misses, I make up what I lost with the kings earlier. But then he gets really overaggressive towards me, which pisses me off, and then when I lose a few bogus hands, TILT. MAJOR TILT. When it's all said and done, I'm down 200k all the way down to 510k. Ouch.

But then today's been better. At one table, the very first hand I get is AK. Flop come king high, I bet out, and get one caller. Turn is an ace. I bet a small bet, he reraises, I push, double up. Then later, same table, AK again. I lead out preflop from somewhere around utg+1 (6 person table). I get one caller. Flop comes AKx. I check, he bets big, I push, he calls with AQ. Thanks for playin. Up to about 150k at that table (bought in with 40k). Then later, I get ladies. Raise preflop, 1 caller, flop comes KQ7, 2 spades. I check, and he bets 6000 into the 6900 pot. I "think" for a long time, then call. The turn is a red 3, and I "think" again, and then bet 4200 into the 18,900 pot. He instapushes and I have never called anything so fast in my life. Hahaha. I don't even remember what he shows, but the river is another meaningless 3. Up to 240k. I ended up finishing the day at 660k. A good day. Gonna play a little more, then it's a live tourney tonight. You kids have fun.

Good Night at the "Cash" Tables

Well, tonight started out real rough. I wasn't playing very well, wasn't very focused, and I was way too aggressive. I was playing a bunch of 10k sng's, and I would either win or bust in all of them. However, this was making my chip stack decline slowly but steadily. So when I got down to about 307k, I decided to mix it up and play some "cash" tables. I bought into 2 300/600 tables with 40k at each table. That's when I started hitting some massive hands, and managed to play a very solid big stack as well. There was a brief moment at one table when a guy sat to my left and continuously bet the pot from position and would repop me all the time. So I just watched and waited as he slowly rose above my stack that used to be 140k. Then came that one hand when he min raised preflop and then bet the pot that came all garbage. I reraised him, which he re-reraised yet again. I then pushed and he instantly folded. Probably not the wisest of moves on my part, but I had to trust my read. As for the night on the whole, I finished one table up 120k and the other up 140k, leaving my overall bankroll at a grand total of 611k. It was a really good night. I'll have to go back to those cash tables again.

A Little Introduction

Hey guys. Saeid's been askin me to blog for quite some time now, and here it finally is. I'm Michael, and I've been playing poker and actually understanding it (not falling in love with A3 because of the ace) for about 3 years. I'm that guy in the group of friends who loves watching poker, talking poker, and playing it, but still refuses to buy into a site. While it's been incredibly tempting seeing all my other friends do well with their buy ins, I'm resisting the urge and trying other ways instead.

I did a bunch of freerolls on UB, Absolute Poker, Pittbull Poker, Full Tilt Poker, and even Royal Vegas Poker for a while, but when it's 4000 people gunning for 18-27 spots and if you cash you get 60 cents to a dollar, it's tough to make any noise at all. Lately, however, I've turned to FTP because of the good play chip format. So now I'm that guy who grinds along on play chip tables.

About two weeks ago I hit my high at 1.3 million chips. Hahaha. It cracks me up that I have that much and no real money. But I then played in the 500k buy in tourney where the top 18 cash real money. The first time I came in 7th, raking in a whopping $2. With that, I played 5 $1.25 sng's, cashing in 3rd in the first 3, and bubbling the next 2, leaving me at $1.15. After busting in the next 500k tourney, I was left with 300k in play chips. Then today I busted 230th/736 in a dollar tourney where the top 72 cashed. So now it's back to the play chip tables. Grindin away. It's tough to stay focused after playin some cash games, and especially after cashin for $80 for Saeid a while ago. But oh well. I'll keep ya posted.

I also briefly played some cash games (6-tabling NL10) and made close to $10.

So, the good thing is that I finished Saturday in the black, albeit barely. I'm trying to remind myself that is a good thing. I cashed in 3 tourneys and ran deep in a few others as well. Yesterday could have been a very profitable night. However, what some people fail to realize is that is the exact reason I am disappointed. You see, very very good MTT players finish in the money close to 20% of the time. They whiff 4 out of every 5 tourneys they enter. So, cashing in a tourney is a big deal and when you're in the money, you want to do all you can to take the event down (or in the very least, make the final table).

Today I'm more than likely playing the exact same schedule with the exclusion of the last two tournaments (I think). Classes start tomorrow and I believe I heard somewhere down the line that adequate rest is needed for those.

Bankroll is still at that $100 mark.

Back above the $100 mark

I placed 4th in a $5 Turbo on Sunday for $78.62 which finally brought my bankroll past the $100 mark. I hope its finally time to get something going.

The tournament score also gave me over $6,000 in tournament winnings. Quite the achievement, IMO.

Now, if I can only work on keeping the tournament money that I win...

Kinda back,

Played sporadically and uninspired until a few days ago where I, still uninspired, managed to convert my last Tournament Dollar into $3 in a small $1 turbo MTT. I played the same MTT the next day and final tabled, taking 3rd for $40ish. A few days later, I finally didn't finish ITM, but a day after that I final tabled yet again, taking 4th.

Bankroll is at $55ish probably and I'm not really putting in any hours whatsoever. That $1 turbo lasts ~2 hours and I rarely even play that. I've got family in town this break so my playing time is scarce.

Will probably pick things up again sometime in the future. Just wanted to let you guys know that I have some sort of bankroll on UB.
